From 1 August, Rewe, Penny and Nahkauf will be giving away fresh fruit and vegetable bags when they go shopping.

The campaign aims to help in the fight against plastic waste.

Cologne – For many people, when shopping for loose fruit and vegetables in the supermarket, the classic knotted bag is still the method of choice.

The thin plastic bag usually hangs on a roll to be torn off in the relevant departments and is also free.

So it's no wonder that most customers still like to reach for the bags.

In many households, however, when unpacking at home, these knot bags immediately find their way into the plastic bin.

Conserving resources is different, that's what the supermarket chain Rewe thinks too.

Therefore, according to 24RHEIN, Rewe, together with its subsidiaries Penny and Nahkauf, now want to offer a real incentive to do without knot bags when buying loose fruit and vegetables.

From August 1, Rewe, Penny and Nahkauf are giving away their reusable fresh food nets in all branches nationwide when buying loose fruit and vegetables.

The freshness nets can be closed and reused for the next purchase.

This makes them significantly more sustainable than the classic knot bags.

A total of 14 million such nets are available to give away as part of the free campaign starting August 1st.

According to Rewe, the nets are available “while stocks last”.

In October, Rewe introduced reusable fresh food nets as an alternative to plastic bags for loose fruit and vegetables.

The freshness net can be washed and is reusable.

This is to conserve resources and avoid plastic waste.

There is also no difference when it comes to weighing: the weight of the net is deducted at the checkout.

Rewe and Penny: Fresh fruit and vegetable networks now free

"With the reusable freshness net, our customers can easily make a contribution to climate and resource protection by doing without the plastic knot bag and regularly reusing the net when shopping," says Patricia Hirsch, Penny Division Manager Ultra Freshness - fruit, vegetables, flowers and Plant.

The idea with the free fresh food nets is part of Rewe's current sustainability strategy "Avoid.

Reduce.

To enhance".

The nets were introduced in October 2018. At that time, they cost 1.49 euros in a pack of two.

In 2019, Penny followed as a discounter and also introduced the reusable fresh food nets.
