Sting: "Democracy is in danger all over the world" | Israel today

2022-08-01T12:59:22.274Z

The veteran singer and former member of the band Polis performed in Poland and between songs talked to the audience about the war in Ukraine and a worrying global trend that, in his opinion, should be taken into account

The singer Sting warned an audience at his performance in Warsaw about the danger to democracy.

The British musician appeared in the capital of Poland last Saturday, and during a break between songs he claimed that the concept of democracy is under attack worldwide, condemned the war in Ukraine and defined it as an "absurdity based on a lie".

The former member of the Police band brought the Polish actor Massiej Stohr to the stage, who translated his words into Polish and informed that democracy "is in real danger of disappearing unless we protect it".

"The alternative to democracy is a prison, a mental prison," the singer said.

"The alternative to democracy is violence, oppression, imprisonment and silencing."

He illustrated his words by shaking his head.

Poland, of course, borders Ukraine, which, as you remember, is still at war with Russia since February 24, even if the media coverage of the issue has decreased significantly.

Since the invasion, Poland has become a place of refuge for Ukrainians fleeing their country, more than any other country.

"If we swallow this lie, the lie will eat us," Sting added.

Presumably, this is how the singer referred to the Russian justification for the invasion of Ukraine, regarding its desire to de-Nazify the country (headed by a Jewish president).

He also said that democracy is a "messy and frustrating" thing, but "it's still worth fighting for."

His words were received with applause, after which he performed his song "Fragile".
