Oleander not only needs sun, but also many nutrients to form flowers.

An ideal home remedy for fertilizing is coffee grounds.

Munich - Oleander also grows in the Mediterranean region on poor, dry soil, but the undemanding impression is deceptive: the plant has a very high nutrient requirement.

If you want to have a richly flowering shrub in this country, you have to support the oleander with sufficient fertilizer.

Coffee grounds are a good home remedy for this.

The oleander (Nerium oleander) is a heavy feeder that needs a lot of nutrients - over-fertilization is rather unlikely.

Yellow leaves or diseases indicate a deficiency.

Both mineral and organic fertilizers are used as fertilizers.

Coffee or tea?

Oleander likes both, so you can also use home remedies such as black tea or coffee grounds.

As a fertiliser, coffee grounds contain valuable ingredients such as potassium for cell formation, phosphorus for flower formation and nitrogen for leaf growth.

Before using coffee grounds, you must spread them out to air dry.

It is important that it is not stored damp, otherwise mold can form.

The coffee grounds, when used, are then lightly worked into the root area of the soil.

Watering afterwards is not necessary immediately.

If so, then you should water with tap water, as oleander likes the lime it contains.

And this is how you fertilize your oleander bush properly:

  • Starting with the growth period in March, you should provide the plant with liquid fertilizer once a week. There are also special oleander fertilizers for this, or – if necessary alternating – with coffee grounds.

Egg shells are also suitable here as a natural fertilizer.

  • If you want to be on the safe side, use a slow-release fertilizer instead (best for Mediterranean plants) once the plant is put outside again in spring.

  • From around the end of August, the oleander has a fertilization break: From this point on, it is only poured.

In autumn, the oleander must also be made winter-proof, since the plant is only partially frost-resistant.
