The police shot dead a man during an eviction in Cologne.

The 48-year-old had previously attacked the emergency services in the Ostheim district with a knife, said the officials in Cologne and Bonn and the Cologne public prosecutor's office.

Initially, the police officers used pepper spray and threatened to use firearms, which was unsuccessful.

Then the officers fired.

The man was fatally injured.

He had already made threats in advance in the event of an eviction, it was said.

For this reason, the bailiff asked the police for assistance.

The officials in Bonn took over the investigation for reasons of neutrality.
