(ANSA) - ROME, AUGUST 03 - Moscow accused "the Azerbaijani armed forces of violating the ceasefire in Nagorno-Karabakh" and said it was ready to "stabilize" the situation.

This was stated in a note by the Russian defense ministry.

"The command of the Russian peacekeeping contingent by adopting measures to stabilize the situation together with the representatives of the Azerbaijani and Armenian sides", reads a note released by the Tass agency.

Azerbaijan and the self-proclaimed republic of Nagorno-Karabakh in the last few hours accuse each other of breaking the ceasefire and denounce the death of their own fighter each.

The Azerbaijani Defense Ministry accused the fighters of the self-proclaimed republic of targeting Azerbaijani army exposures in the Lachin district (under the supervision of Russian troops) by killing a conscript soldier.

Nagorno-Karabakh in turn pointed the finger at the Azerbaijani army accusing it of killing one fighter and wounding eight others.

In the fall of 2020, there were bloody inter-Armenian and Azerbaijani fighting in Nagorno-Karabakh, where more than 6,500 people are estimated to have lost their lives.

A ceasefire agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan was signed in November 2020 with the mediation of Moscow.

According to the document, Azerbaijan has retained the conquered territories and Armenia has also ceded other areas of the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh and neighboring territories to it.

Also on the basis of the agreement, Russia has also sent about 2,000 soldiers to Nagorno-Karabakh, with the official aim of respecting the truce.

The Armenian opposition has branded the truce agreement as a "capitulation", but according to Prime Minister Pashinyan, continuing to fight the defeat of the troops would only have been heavier.
