Only a few Israeli tourists at all come to the wild and dramatic island of Samothrace located in the northern Aegean Sea.

The island is recognized in Greek mythology as the island of the great gods and is indeed a perfect setting for the mythical stories, as the island looks like a kind of impressive mountain emerging from the sea.

The most dominant factor in the landscape is Mount Saos, which rises to a height of 1,611 meters and is considered the highest mountain in the Aegean Sea.

Samothrace is a place of extraordinary natural beauty with unspoiled wild nature, steep rocky slopes, rich flora and fauna, forests with gorse trees that often reach the coast, pines, chestnuts, cedars, olives, waterfalls and magical beaches.

The water of Samothrace, due to its quality and cleanliness, was ranked among the four finest in Europe.

Samothrace, whose name means "the high land in the sea", is one island divided into two different areas in the landscape.

The north and northeast are green and have slopes, forests with ancient trees, fruit crops, dense bush areas, impressive waterfalls and wild nature.

Whereas in the south of the island and in the southwest there are low hills and steep cliffs rising above the sea, sparse vegetation, fields and olive groves.

The unique nature of the island is a habitat for endemic plants and a habitat for special animals including, for example, the local chamois and the monachus seal (common monk seal) that lives only in the northern Aegean Sea.

In between, the island is dotted with archaeological sites immersed in a green landscape, castles and towers, picturesque settlements and other man-made elements that blend harmoniously into nature.

The island is also famous in the world for the ancient Greek victory statue Nike of Samothrace standing 2.75 meters high, which was found in 1863 on the island and is currently displayed in the Louvre Museum in Paris.

Samothrace has an oval shape and throughout history the island has attracted residents and visitors like a magnet.

The presence of all the cultures that left a mark here remains evidence to this day.

The small port where the cruises arrive is in the small town of Kamariotissa, where the night life of the island is also concentrated.

The capital of the island, Samothraki Chora, is a small, ancient and beautiful town with a fortress and it has many restaurants, taverns, shops and more.

The island is also a destination for lovers of hot springs (Therma) found in naturally sculpted pools under the sky.

Some say that resting the body in thermal baths in the open air while looking at the sea is a real medicine for the soul, and that here the sense of time is lost.

The island of course has excellent sandy beaches such as Pachia Beach, which is located in the south of the island and has dramatic cliffs jutting out above it.

There are quite a few hidden and isolated beaches that are hidden and it's fun to discover them and spend time there.

It's a bit challenging to get to Samothrace: you can get there by ferry from Alexandroupolis in northern Greece, which is reached from Thessaloniki and takes about three hours by bus or car.

Another option is to fly to Athens and from there take an internal flight to Alexandroupoli.

Cruises depart from Alexandroupoli every day and the duration of the cruise is about two hours.

Without a doubt, this is one of the magical islands where time takes on a different meaning.

The richest moments in life are those that make time fly or stand still.

In Samothrace every moment is like that.
