Turandot

is the last lyric drama by Puccini, inspired by the eighteenth-century theatrical tale of the same name by Carlo Gozzi.

It was staged for the first time at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan on 25 April 1926, directed by a moved Arturo Toscanini, who chose to conclude the opera with the death of the fragile and very sweet Liù, the exact point where the work of the author, who died a year and a half earlier.

Puccini's notes for the finale were entrusted to another composer, Franco Alfano, to whom we owe the conclusion with which Turandot is traditionally performed.

Veronesi are the actors of the libretto, Giuseppe Adami and Renato Simoni who placed the action “at the time of fairy tales”, in an ancient and timeless Beijing, which is lavishly recreated by Franco Zeffirelli for this Arena staging conceived in 2010.

The blockbuster and cinematic show therefore fits perfectly into the glorious Arena tradition, expertly combining the glance given by the mass scenes and the attention to detail.

"For the last opera title of the Festival, one of the most spectacular productions, fruit of the undisputed genius of Franco Zeffirelli, returns to the Verona Arena" declared Cecilia Gasdia, Superintendent and Artistic Director of the Arena di Verona Foundation. he added - excellent voices will perform on stage, starting with the expected return of Anna Netrebko and Yusif Eyvazov, whom I myself accompanied in 2018 on the stage of the Arena just as the Turandot scenography was mounted. And there I convinced them to come together with the Verona Arena, giving birth to a partnership that has seen them return every year ".

“We invite the public to come to the Arena, to dream with us and immerse themselves in this timeless magic” concluded Cecilia Gasdia.

Six replicas of Puccini's masterpiece are scheduled, until 2 September.
