The Fagradalsfjall volcano in Iceland erupted about 30 kilometers from the capital Reykjavik.
Lava spurts out of a long crack in the earth, like water from a hot spring.
There is currently no danger to humans.
However, the police advise against going into the area.
Several streets were closed to traffic.
The Fagradalsfjall erupted last year.
It took six months for the volcano to calm down.
It is unclear how long it will take this time. Iceland lies between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates.
Because the plates move in opposite directions, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are common on the island nation.
