The marine animal was seen near Vernon, in Eure. He is currently being tracked by the authorities.

The beluga spotted Tuesday in the Seine was located this Thursday "more than thirty kilometers from its location yesterday (Wednesday) near a lock", said the Eure prefecture in a press release.

The animal would therefore be around 70 km from Paris, towards the town of Vernon, to the northwest of the capital.

The authorities will try to keep it to make observations, announced the prefecture of Eure.

This protected species is a cetacean that usually lives in cold waters.

In adulthood, a beluga measures about 4 m.

Seeing him in a lock is therefore unusual.

A lock is in some ways a dam implanted in a canal or a watercourse whose water level can be raised or lowered, to make it navigable and allow boats to cross unevenness.

“In order to make the necessary observations and in cooperation with Voies navigables de France, a maintenance maneuver in the lock basin will be carried out in the afternoon” Thursday, continued the prefecture.

The authorities have also called for caution and ask the population "not to try to approach or come into contact with the animal".

Sea Shepherd alerted by the situation

The environmental NGO Sea Shepherd has already mobilized to help the Beluga trapped in the Seine.

The association is counting on the mobilization of the prefect and the population to save the animal, so that the story of the killer whale in the Seine does not repeat itself.

After Sedna, the orca who met a tragic end last June, it is a beluga who sank into the Seine.

We are in contact with the @Prefet27 and our teams are mobilizing urgently to get there.

Let's do everything to prevent history from repeating itself.

Last June, an orca was observed in the Seine, between Rouen and Le Havre.

The animal was finally found dead and an autopsy favored death by starvation.

But forensic scientists had also found a bullet lodged in the base of the animal's skull.

A rescue operation had however been organized, but the animal, blocked for more than two months could not be saved.

Following this revelation, the Sea Shepherd association launched an appeal to offer 10,000 euros to anyone who finds the author of the shot on the young female.
