The Häagen-Dazs brand ice cream recall has to be drastically expanded.

A carcinogenic breakdown product of ethylene oxide has been detected in more than ten varieties.

Munich – The manufacturer General Mills, in cooperation with Genuport Trade GmbH, is once again recalling many different ice cream products from its Häagen-Dazs brand.

Vanilla ice cream products are particularly affected by the recall.

The corresponding batches are taken from the refrigerated shelves of all selected supermarkets.

This recall affects vanilla in pints, mini-cups and bulk.

According to the US manufacturer, other formats or flavors of Häagen-Dazs products are not affected and will not be replaced or refunded.

Ethylene Oxide (ETO) is a pesticide and sterilant.

“At Häagen-Dazs we do not use ETO in any of our products, which are regularly tested according to national standards.

The trace levels of ETO mentioned can be traced back to an ingredient (vanilla extract) provided by one of our suppliers.

The amounts of substance detected slightly exceed allowable thresholds relative to regulatory standards," General Mills said in a press release.

The manufacturer General Mills has once again had to recall its Häagen-Dazs ice cream products from the trade.

Consumers who have purchased an affected pack of Häagen-Dazs can return it to the store and you will be refunded the purchase price.

According to the manufacturer, other Häagen-Dazs products can be consumed without hesitation.

  • What is ethylene oxide?

  • According to the

    Hamburg consumer advice

center, ethylene oxide is a pesticide and fumigant and is used to combat bacteria and fungi.

As such, it is banned in Europe, but it is still used in other countries such as Turkey or India.

Due to imports, it can happen again and again that foodstuffs contaminated with ethylene oxide end up on the German market.

  • Ethylene oxide is classified by the

    Federal Institute for Risk Assessment

     as carcinogenic and mutagenic.

Residues in food are therefore fundamentally "undesirable".

If limit values are exceeded, there is a recall.

Since September 2020, ethylene oxide has been detected primarily in sesame and products containing sesame such as tahini, muesli, crispbread, pastries, sesame oil and salad toppings.

Wash before eating?

Definitely not with these foods!
