The full moon on August 12, 2022 will be a supermoon again as it comes particularly close to Earth.

The next super moon will not follow until next year.

Even if the moon phases used to have a completely different meaning, before digital clocks and omnipresent time, and together with the sun determined the daily routine and everyday events, there are still arguments for living according to the moon phases.

Since the grain harvest is brought in around August, the moon is called grain or harvest moon, as it is called in old German.

Some dialects also call him Ernting.

Native Americans gave the full moon in August the nickname "Störmond", because in August the large bony fish that live in both salt and fresh water often wriggled on the fishing hook.

Anyone who follows the farmer's rules in August knows that the weather around the Assumption Day can provide information about autumn.

It was not until July 13th that amateur astronomers were able to marvel at the largest supermoon of 2022.

But the full moon on Friday, August 12, at 3:36 a.m. is also considered a super moon at a distance of 361,411 kilometers.

One speaks of a super moon when the moon is in the opposite position to the sun, so that the facing side of the moon is fully illuminated.

The average distance to Earth is about 384,400 kilometers.

This year is therefore particularly eventful, because according to the lunar calendar there were four super moons: from May to August all particularly large full moons shone in the night sky.

The following full moon on September 10th will already be 369,132 kilometers away and the next supermoon will not be seen again until August 2023.
