While the harvest is just beginning in France, at the other end of the continent, near Lisbon, we are finishing extracting another material


If you're uncorking a rosé from Provence this weekend around the barbecue, tasting a Bordeaux or even popping the champagne, take a look at the cork.

There is an 80% chance that it comes from Portugal.

Specifically from the cork oak forests of Montado in the Ribatejo, 80 km east of Lisbon.

On one side of the road, marshes and rice fields where storks wander.

On the other, an arid, sandy land, overwhelmed with heat in this torrid summer.
