A woman is said to have injured her three-month-old daughter so badly in Geldersheim that she died shortly afterwards.
The 27-year-old admitted to having harmed the child, police and prosecutors said.
Exactly how the girl died is just as unclear as the background to the act on Saturday in Geldersheim.
An autopsy revealed that the girl died of violence.
Officials were called to a reception center for asylum seekers on Saturday because of the injured baby.
The seriously injured child had already been treated there by an emergency doctor when investigators arrived.
The girl died later in hospital from her injuries.
The mother was arrested on site and is now in custody on suspicion of murder.
The investigations are ongoing.
