A cable theft paralyzed high-speed trains between the Spanish cities of Madrid and Barcelona for more than five hours on Monday.

22 trains were canceled by Monday noon, more than 7,000 passengers were affected, reported the state television broadcaster RTVE and other media, citing the Adif railway company.

Signal system brought to a standstill

Meanwhile, the police of the Catalonia region said a 19-year-old had been arrested in Tarragona on suspicion of stealing around 600 meters of fiber optic cable.

The act brought the signal system to a standstill.

The AVE trains, which operate at speeds of up to 310 kilometers per hour, are known for their punctuality and reliability.
