As nice as the time outdoors is: Staying in the sun for a long time takes a toll on our skin.

You can read here how long you should protect them after sunbathing.

Sunbeams are necessary for survival, not only for humans.

Plants can only thrive if they get enough light.

People can even get sick if they don't get enough sun.

When exposed to sunlight, the body initiates the production of vitamin D.

For this, however, the sun must fall on bare skin or the retina of the eyes.

According to the Robert Koch Institute, a sufficiently high vitamin D level is important for bone mineralization and thus bone health.

In addition, vitamin D is involved in many metabolic processes and has shown positive effects on high blood pressure and diabetes in observational studies.

But the skin does not have to be exposed to the sun for hours to achieve the desired vitamin D effect.

As the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health informs, people who are particularly UV-sensitive produce the vitamin D they need in ten minutes in the midday sun, people with normal sensitivity in twenty minutes and less sensitive people in 20 to 40 minutes.

However, it is more advisable to be exposed to the sun in the morning or afternoon, because the sun is not as strong then.

Twelve hour break after a long sunbath

In general, however, staying in the sun for too long without protection promotes the development of skin cancer.

Sunburn in particular increases the risk enormously.

The specialist magazine PTAheute reports that frequent sunburns can lead to the body's own repair mechanisms no longer being able to completely eliminate the cell damage in the skin.

In the long term, this increases the risk of skin cancer.

But even without sunburn, sunbathing puts a strain on our body. It has to render the potentially harmful UV radiation harmless to our body.

According to PTA today, this is achieved by activating the skin's own protective mechanisms.

This includes the formation of melanin and the formation of calluses, a thickening of the horny layer of the skin that prevents

Extensive sunbathing overloads these endogenous protective mechanisms and thus damages the skin cells.

Even without sunburn, a sun break of at least twelve hours is necessary so that the skin's repair mechanisms can regenerate, PTA warns today.
