Actor Ashton Kutcher revealed last night (Monday) that he has been battling a severe autoimmune disease that has affected his hearing, vision and ability to walk for over a year.

"Two years ago, I had this weird, rare form of vasculitis," Kutcher said in an exclusive video clip released to Access Hollywood from the upcoming episode of National Geographic's "Running Wild with Bear Grylls: The Challenge."

"The disease messed up my vision, messed up my hearing, messed up my balance. It took me almost a year to build it all back up," said the 44-year-old Kutcher.

"You don't really appreciate it until it's gone, until you go, 'I don't know if I'll ever be able to see again. I don't know if I'll ever be able to hear again, I don't know if I'll ever be able to walk again,'" Kutcher said.

"I'm lucky to be alive."

What is an autoimmune disease?

In autoimmune inflammatory diseases there is a problem in the control of the immune system.

Instead of attacking only external pests, the immune system attacks the body itself.

Some of these diseases have a distinct genetic component.

We know that if there is a first degree relative in the family, such as a father or siblings who are sick, there is a higher risk of developing an autoimmune disease.

It should be noted that most of these diseases affect several systems in the body, for example skin and joints in psoriasis, digestive system and eyes in Crohn's and more.

Autoimmune diseases are chronic diseases, which are characterized by more and less stormy periods.

Even during periods when the disease is silent, it is highly recommended to be under medical supervision, in order to prevent premature flare-ups of the disease and aggravation that may cause damage.

The inflammation narrows these blood vessels and restricts blood flow.

What is vasculitis?

Vasculitis occurs when the body's immune system attacks veins, arteries and small capillaries.

The inflammation narrows these blood vessels and restricts blood flow or even cuts off blood flow completely, possibly causing organ damage or the formation of an aneurysm (a bulge in the wall of a blood vessel), according to the US National Institutes of Health. If an aneurysm bursts, it can cause bleeding internal that can lead to death.

Depending on the specific type and severity of the condition and which organs are targeted, the symptoms of vasculitis vary and can be mild, moderate, or life-threatening. Common symptoms include loss of appetite, weight loss, fatigue, rash, aches, pains, and fever.
