Some of the richest men in the world are funding a massive treasure hunt on Greenland's west coast.

The Scrooge group includes Jeff Bezos, Michael Bloomberg and Bill Gates: the goal is the deposits of rare minerals useful to power hundreds of millions of electric vehicles and batteries to store renewable energy.

According to CNN, the billionaire club is financially supporting Kobold Metals, a California-based mining exploration company and startup.

The company has partnered with Bluejay Mining to find rare and precious metals in Greenland.

In short, the bet is that under the surface of the hills and valleys of the island of Disko and of the Nuussuaq peninsula in Greenland there are quantities of nickel and cobalt that allow the green energy transition.

Now thirty geologists, geophysicists, cooks, pilots and mechanics are encamped at the site where Kobold and Blujay are looking for the buried treasure.

"We are looking for a field that will be the first or the second most significant nickel and cobalt deposit in the world," CEO of Kobold Metals told Kurt House.

The disappearance of Arctic ice, on land and in the ocean, highlights a unique dichotomy: Greenland is the reference point for the impacts of climate change, but it could also become the reference point for the supply of metals needed to solve the crisis.

CNN has published the first video of the ongoing activity.
