There is a massive fish kill in the Oder.
The phenomenon can be observed in Brandenburg near Frankfurt and the surrounding area, the city administration said.
The causes are still unclear.
The responsible authorities are currently examining the background.
The city warned "strongly" against coming into contact with the water of the river.
The city administration advised against using the water and consuming fish caught there.
Dogs should also not be allowed in the water.
The reason given was that there was still no reliable information about the causes, the concentration of any pollutants and possible dangers.
Anglers found dead fish on the shore as early as July
The exact cause of the massive fish kill is still unclear.
However, a Polish authority found a toxic substance in two places.
The investigations should continue.
The public prosecutor's office in Wroclaw (Breslau) is investigating a possible environmental crime.
According to the Polish media, the first reports of anglers who had found dead fish on the shore came out at the end of July.
According to the authorities, the number is now in the thousands, there is talk of tons that were first found in Lower Silesia, but now also in the Lubuskie Voivodeship further north.
Anglers who had fished dead fish out of the river spoke of an "ecological tragedy".
So far, there is no reliable information about the causes and the concentration of any pollutants in the different sections of the river, according to the city of Frankfurt (Oder).
