British illustrator and author Raymond Briggs died on Tuesday morning at the age of 88.

This was announced by the publisher Penguin Random House, citing Briggs' family.

The Brit is best known for his illustration of a snowman in the children's book of the same name, which was published in 1978 and has sold 5.5 million copies worldwide.

"We know Raymond's books have been loved by millions of people around the world who will be saddened to hear this news," the family said in a statement.

Briggs hung drawings of fans, especially children, on his wall and really appreciated them.

“He shared his humor and weirdness with his family and circle of artist friends – at get-togethers, dress-up parties and summer picnics in the garden.”

In the 1980s, in addition to the children's books, Brigg's work »When the wind blows« from 1986 caused a stir.

The cartoon shows the fate of an elderly couple before and after a nuclear disaster.

The film was released a few months after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster.

Paul Hardcastle and Genesis contributed songs to the soundtrack.

The title track "When The Wind Blows" is by David Bowie.

"Raymond's books are visual masterpieces that raise some of the most fundamental questions of what it means to be human, appealing to adults and children alike with illustrations and a remarkable economy of words," said Francesca Dow, editor of Penguin Random House for Children's Books is responsible, in a statement.

Briggs will leave a big gap.
