Is a letter of application still relevant?

Some companies are already doing without it.

LinkedIn also questions the cover letter in a tweet.

It's annoying, it involves copy and paste, and yet it was always a necessary evil when applying for a job: the cover letter.

However, a tweet from the career

portal LinkedIn

now questions exactly this approach to applications:

"Little Miss will abandon an application if it requires a cover letter," the tweet reads, implying that the cover letter is a hurdle for many.

Many memes are currently circulating on the Internet under the name “Little Miss”, with Guilty Pleasures or bad habits in particular being shared, according to the

Business Punk

portal .

Actually, "Little Miss" is known as a character from children's books.

Little Miss: Tweet against the cover letter meets with understanding

The LinkedIn tweet was favorited around 68,000 times, shared around 20,000 times and commented on almost 1,500 times.

Many comments go in a similar direction, which is also implied in the "Little Miss" tweet, so an application process without a cover letter is desired.

A user writes: "Every time!

Would you like an application or a bedtime story?” Another user criticizes the application options of some companies:

I stop applying if I need to upload a cover letter or fill in information that is on my resume (education or work history).

It's 2022, there's no reason the site is lagging behind enough to require that.

If it does, the company will also lag behind.

Some HR professionals also comment under the tweet, they have different opinions.

"For me as a head of human resources, cover letters are essential.

When you receive many applications for a job, the cover letter is an important feature to create visibility.

Many have a good degree, but very few have a good cover letter,” comments one HR manager on his point of view.

Another explains that he had been a HR manager for twenty years and had hardly read cover letters.

Another HR manager also criticizes the randomness of many applications, according to him there are many from which he has to look for skills and knowledge that are relevant to the advertised position.

There are currently also some TikTok videos in which the experiences with applications are described.

For example, an applicant reacted to a job rejection with a meme, and as a result she got an interview.

LinkedIn tweet: Users comment on what is annoying about applications

Under the tweet, however, users also comment who also criticize other aspects of the application process.

For example, one user writes: "Little Miss should block job postings that don't state a salary." Others are annoyed by job postings that lead to an external link and require a new user account.

What many also find annoying is that information that is already on the CV has to be filled out again in questionnaires.
