The images are striking.
A “fire tornado” formed on the evening of Wednesday August 10 in a brush fire in California (United States).
The weather phenomenon was filmed from a helicopter of a local television channel, KTLA-TV, while nearly 200 firefighters were mobilized to overcome this blaze nicknamed "Sam fire".
A "fire tornado" forms when a devil of dust meets a fire.
The hot, dry air rises sharply skyward and forms a vortex near the fire.
These whirlpools can even be several hundred meters high, move over hundreds of meters, and reach an internal temperature of 1,500 to 2,000°C.
A rather spectacular phenomenon but which is not so rare.
Other whirlwinds of fire have already been filmed in the United States, notably in Colorado in August 2016, where the flames rose several tens of meters above the ground.
