You probably know the classic German recipe Toast Hawaii, right?

Take toast, ham, cheese and pineapple and the snack is ready.

What for us today is more of a simple student meal was considered a real affluent dish in the 1950s.

Cheese AND ham on a slice of bread?

What decadence and not to mention the exotic pineapple on top!

The pineapple was already considered a sign of wealth in earlier times, as only a few nobles could afford an expensive greenhouse for the tropical delicacy in the 18th century.

Pineapple was more expensive than gold and therefore a real status symbol, which still decorates many castles and villas today.

Fortunately, we can now easily buy pineapples in the supermarket.
