VIDEO — Michel Orier, music director at the Maison de la radio, takes over the reins of the event after eight years under the direction of Jean-Pierre Rousseau.

He had wanted to be regional and multiplied the concerts in the small towns.

And if, with 111 concerts and 60,000 spectators, the 2022 edition entitled

So British

has not been unworthy, for the past few years, the Radio France Occitanie Montpellier Festival has lost its energy and all its luster.

The departure of Jean-Pierre Rousseau, head of the event since 2014, and the appointment of Michel Orier, music director at the Maison de la radio, are therefore an opportunity to refocus on the city.

"

We wanted to relaunch the festival on its historic territory

", confirmed Michaël Delafosse, the PS mayor of Montpellier.

The contributions of the region, the city and the metropolis will be reversed, so that the latter two again become the majority.

With this new direction, the festival returns to its origins.

In 1985, Georges Frêche wanted Montpellier to be proud of a musical festival on a par with that of Aix-en-Provence, not devoted to opera as in Aix, but to symphonic music.

The partnership with Radio France had allowed the city to shine on the European level, thanks to the many concerts broadcast within the framework of the European Radiophony Union.

The new take-off of the festival will allow the municipality to make its mark, with the desire to broaden the public by attracting more eclectic and certainly younger spectators.

The objective is obviously that the Radio France Montpellier festival continues to shine, to help the city become the European capital of culture in 2028.
