Minister of Awqaf Muhammad Abdul Sattar Al-Sayed stressed the importance of mercy and affection between husband and wife to build a healthy family free of violence and raise children in a way that guarantees their psychological and physical safety within an atmosphere of a loving family that respects rights and duties.

In a lecture he gave today at the University of Damascus, entitled “The Impact of Domestic Violence on Society and the Protection of Children from Contemporary Challenges,” Minister Al-Sayed pointed out that one of the most important causes of violence is ignorance of religion and the duties it carries towards the family, honoring parents, strengthening ties of kinship and equality between children, noting that marriage is governed. A divine link derived from the divine laws.

Minister Al-Sayed’s lecture came as part of a training course program organized by the Ministry of Awqaf in cooperation with Damascus University, the National Union of Syrian Students and Afaf Center for Family Reform in Damascus. Psychological disorders resulting from domestic violence, amendments to the Personal Status Law, and the impact of international conventions on protection from domestic violence.

The President of Damascus University, Dr. Muhammad Osama Al-Jabban, drew attention to the university’s role in society by spreading awareness of various issues, including combating domestic violence and its dangers, pointing out that there are activities that are carried out periodically in coordination with the various ministries and relevant NGOs.

For her part, the head of the Syrian Commission for Family and Population Affairs, Eng. Samar Sebaei, explained that part of the commission's work focuses on promoting children's rights and combating domestic violence, noting that the commission is also working on preparing studies in cooperation with various ministries on a number of family issues.

For her part, Dr. Ruba Mirza, a member of the People’s Assembly and head of the “My Country” association, pointed to the importance of raising awareness of laws and legislation that guarantee the rights of women and children and building societal awareness of them to build a healthy family.

The lecture was attended by the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Dr. Bassam Ibrahim, the Secretary of the Damascus University branch of the Arab Socialist Baath Party, Dr. Khaled Al-Halbouni, a number of members of the branch’s leadership, the head of the National Union of Syrian Students, Dareen Suleiman, the university’s vice presidents, a number of faculties’ deans and faculty members.
