Tied up in the street without being able to escape and without water, thrown into a bag like garbage, left at home alone by those who go on vacation and have no time or desire to organize themselves: it is the fate of many pets that, as by now sad custom, they go towards a certain end.

A phenomenon that of summer abandonments constantly monitored by animal welfare associations and which is counted by the Ministry of Health.

A phenomenon, however, which, despite surveillance, is repeated and grows every year: "only in two weeks in June - reports Enpa - we received a shower of reports and only in two weeks in June we have recovered 1000 puppies of dogs. Especially in the South ".

And not only dogs are abandoned: on the contrary, as cats are almost always without microchips, it is easier to remove them.

And here too there are reports.

In addition to the phenomenon of abandonment, Enpa also signals another way that is increasingly taking hold, less cruel but certainly difficult to accept for anyone who has had a dog with them: the sale to other owners or to the organizations themselves.

A phenomenon that, if in some ways it is understandable (death of an owner, post-pandemic economic difficulties, etc.) in other ways is configured as a 'disguised' abandonment.

"Lots of transfers, a new frontier of abandonment, - explains Carla Rocchi, National President of Enpa - often the result of hasty adoptions and the lack of awareness of what kind of commitment involves

And in the meantime, abandonments continue despite the many campaigns and famous testimonials that invite Italians not to: for example, this year Oipa launched its summer campaign against abandonment, giving a voice and a face to those who, after having adopted a stray through the association, he invites you to never betray him, because: "If you adopt an animal it is for life".

This may seem an obvious phrase, but unfortunately there are still too many people who adopt unconsciously and then mercilessly abandon their four-legged family member. "And also Enpa in July returned to 100 Italian squares for the National Day against abandonment Rocchi, president of Enpa, recalled on that occasion that "Last year Enpa sterilized 13,849 dogs and 29,012 cats, a

fundamental action to combat stray dogs.

And again in 2021 we gave up 17818 dogs and 15412 cats for adoption. "A phenomenon therefore for which there is an enormous effort on the part of associations and volunteers but which always remains very strong:" In the twelve months of 2021, in Italian health kennels 72,115 dogs entered, 29,194 those welcomed by shelter kennels.

Altogether 101,309 new entries.

Regional data on stray dogs for the year 2021 have been published by the Ministry of Health. Black jersey of entrances to Lazio (9,158 entrances to healthcare facilities and 3,384 to shelters) followed by Campania (8,702 and 3,200) and Sicily (8,192 to healthcare).

The Ministry of Health has also published the data relating to new adoptions made through public or private shelters with agreements.

Overall, there were 33,981 adoptions with Puglia at the top in the ranking of the Regions that found a home for a dog (6,259 Apulian animals adopted) followed by Campania (5,526) and Lazio (4,693) ". From a survey carried out by ' association shows that there are several reasons for those who leave their dog: death of the owner,
