Peak's biographical details present a real pioneer, like the youth of the first or second aliyah • someone who chose a different path to fulfill himself

For years I walked with a small vision in my head, an imagination of a conversation between Zvika Pick and his parents, when he started composing and singing his songs.

Pop hits that scorched the radio and infected every ear around.

The conversation went something like this: "Henrik Ingele, why do you have to walk around half-naked like that, with all that makeup and hair? You could be the next Chopin!"

And even though I was born a decade after this imagined conversation, something in Peek's biography made me think that it might have taken place after all.

A Pole, a new immigrant, with an education in classical music, who broke with the whole family tradition (his grandfather was a conservatory director, his uncle a music professor), to make an art that was certainly considered inferior in his family.

With all due respect, how can you play the piano when the light reflecting off the disco ball enters your eyes?

Maybe it's just a story, but Pick's biographical details show a true pioneer, like the youth of the first or second aliyah.

Someone who chose a different path to fulfill himself.

His pioneering brought between the songs of the Land of Israel, the old and the good, and rough rock, a new concept that today is hard to imagine Israeli music without - FUN.

It's not that Zvika Pick didn't know how to write differently.

Songs such as "Nasaf Tishrei" or "Shani Aphoom", which were hits at the various music festivals, corresponded with the songs of Eretz Israel.

But Zvika Pick understood that we didn't come here just to conquer the wilderness and work the land - we came here to have fun!

He was unapologetic as he went out of his way to get our attention.

With the long hair, the sunglasses, the shiny suits and the nickname that left no room for doubt, "The Maestro" - he sent us hit after hit after hit (with the addition of the words of his ex Mirit Shem-Or).

There was no great ideology there, nor was it tormented love.

He took the young lovers up and up, to dance alongside the automatic dancer, guilt-free.

I mean, today we listen to these songs without guilt.

When Peake was just starting out, he was judged on appearance and unapologetic self-celebration.

After the Six Day War, and also after the Yom Kippur War, it doesn't sound (and doesn't seem) likely to celebrate like this with unrestrained escapism, with music that corresponded with the hottest fashions abroad. They thought he was shallow, they were sure he was full of himself.

But a striker should be infected with a bit of megalomania.

It is impossible to go against tradition, parents and bohemia without believing that you are doing something right.

Until his last day, Pick did not give up his musical language and personal style.

It was a hallmark, which was also an integral part of him.

Much has been written and will be written about Tzedek's wonderful songs, the absolutely wonderful musicianship, and the undeniable contribution to Israeli music and culture.

I'm just mentioning that all of these also required a special character, which was not always easy to digest in the Israeli mainstream.

In the face of the jokes, the imitations and the scorn he sometimes suffered, Zvika Peak had self-confidence.

He knew what he was doing and knew that even many years after his death we would still be dancing to the sounds of the songs he wrote - because everyone needs fun in life.
