(ANSA) - ROME, AUGUST 14 - Salman Rushdie has been disconnected from the respirator and is now able to speak again.

The BBC announces it.

The 75-year-old writer was stabbed just over 24 hours ago during his speech at a convention in New York State and was in serious health.

To confirm the news was also Rushdie's agent, Andrew Wylie, who yesterday had spoken of damage to the liver, to the nerves of an arm and above all the risk that the writer could lose an eye.
