Several days after her brain death, US actress Anne Heche had all of her life-support equipment switched off.

This was confirmed by her spokeswoman Holly Baird on Sunday evening (local time).

The artist was 53 years old and leaves behind two sons from two relationships.

According to the fire department, Heche's car crashed into a house in Los Angeles on August 5 at high speed and only came to a stop after almost ten meters.

The vehicle and the house caught fire.

Her brain death was confirmed last Friday.

According to the laws of the state of California, a person is considered dead. For an organ donation, she was further connected to machines, it was said.

The actress had long wanted to donate her organs, an agent reportedly said after the accident.

Heche made a name for himself with roles in films such as Donnie Brasco, Six Days Seven Nights, Wag the Dog and Volcano and was awarded an Emmy - the US television award.

TV viewers know her from series like »Ally McBeal« and »Nip/Tuck«.

Her marriage to cinematographer Coley Laffoon ended in divorce in 2009.

Prior to her marriage, Heche dated talk show host Ellen DeGeneres at times.
