Sweating at high temperatures in the car is no longer an issue thanks to air conditioning.

However, the device urgently needs regular maintenance.

Stuttgart - With the current weather in Germany, any cooling is right.

Especially those who are driving in summer temperatures are happy about an air conditioner.

It not only cools, but also contributes to safety: According to the ADAC, up to a third more car accidents happen when the temperature rises without air conditioning.

No wonder: in summer, the temperatures inside the vehicle rise to extreme values within a very short time.

With simple tricks, the car stays nice and cool.

If you have an air conditioner, you have to keep it in good condition.

This is the only way to guarantee function and longevity.

Above all, if the ventilation suddenly gives off unpleasant odors, you should urgently check that everything is right.

Bad smell from the air conditioner?

Mold and bacteria can be the reason

A bad smell from the ventilation indicates mold, bacteria and other microorganisms.

These can easily spread through the humid and warm climate in the blower and on the evaporator.

In the event of bacterial and fungal infestation, the air conditioning system should be disinfected immediately, as allergic reactions can result.

You don't have to go to the workshop to get rid of the odors.

You can counteract this yourself with special sprays or foam for the manholes.

To do this, the spray is placed in the footwell and the air conditioning is set to recirculation before the spray is opened.

Get out of the car quickly, because the spray should not be inhaled.

After about 15 minutes, ventilate the car well and the cleaning is complete.

In order to completely eliminate the problem, however, the air filter should also be changed.

This is there to hold back the dirt so that no bacterial cultures or mold can get into the evaporator.

A good choice is an activated carbon filter.

It also filters pollutants out of the air.

After the wet seasons of autumn and winter, spring is the best time for a change.

Air conditioning should be serviced every two years - otherwise it will be expensive

To prevent mold, bacteria and the like from forming in the first place, the air conditioning should be switched off a few minutes before you arrive at your destination, but the ventilation should be left on.

This means that the condensation water evaporates better and there is less moisture in the system - as a result, mold and the like cannot develop so easily.

For most car manufacturers, servicing the air conditioning system is not part of the scope of the inspection.

These are usually only carried out when the performance of the air conditioning system decreases.

But then it can quickly become expensive due to the possible need for spare parts and repairs.

Therefore, it is advisable to service the air conditioner every two years.

The ventilation is checked and the refrigerant is replaced.

The latter is necessary because air conditioning systems lose between eight and fifteen percent of their refrigerant every year.

Especially if you also keep the vehicle cool for your four-legged friend: The car manufacturer Tesla has developed the "Dog Mode" in which the car cools down the interior even when parked.

Depending on the condition of the air conditioning system, disinfection is also carried out.

The price for an inspection of the air conditioning system is between 50 and 200 euros.

The price of the refrigerant used is also very important.
