(ANSA) - ROME, AUGUST 15 - The tradition of the picnic continues with about 6 million Italians who have chosen to spend the day of August in the open air with barbecues on the spot or dishes brought from home, in places spared from bad weather.

This is what emerges from the Coldiretti / Ixè survey which shows that one in two Italians (50%) decided not to stay at home for the "New Year's Eve" in the summer to join relatives / friends, go on vacation or to make a simple trip to the countryside, to the mountains or to the sea.

Among the most popular packed dishes on the beach there is - underlines Coldiretti - the rice or chicken or sea salad brought from home and chosen by 33% of holidaymakers, followed by the simple fruit salad with 20% and the caprese based of mozzarella and tomato which is a must for 13%.

But among the favorite dishes there are also the most rooted recipes of the popular tradition from the vegetable omelette or pasta (6%) to the parmesan (5%) to the meatballs (4%).

Unmissable on all tables is the watermelon even if the heat and drought have reduced the national harvest with the fruits burnt especially in the south, while in the north the effects of hail have been felt, according to the analysis of the Coldiretti which shows that it is grown on an area of about 13,000 hectares from which an average annual production of about 6.5 million quintals is obtained, mainly concentrated in Puglia, Lazio, Emilia-Romagna, Lombardy and Sicily.

The average prices paid to agricultural producers fluctuate around 40 cents per kilo, but in some cases it even drops to 14 cents per kilo, while at the supermarket they are around the euro per kilo.

But if you consider the kiosks the price can reach up to 2.50-3.50 euros per kilo.

It should also be noted that in some cases,

taking advantage of the low prices paid to producers, watermelons - Coldiretti denounces - are sold below cost and used as a flirtatious product to attract consumers in supermarkets.

There are about half a million vacationers who have chosen to spend August 2022 on a farm in the name of good food and relaxation in the open air, still guaranteeing protection inside the structures in case of bad weather, with an increase of 10% also thanks to the return of the foreigners, based on the indications of Terranostra and Campagna Amica.

Many agritourisms have equipped themselves for the day of August with the offer of accommodation and complete meals but also of packed breakfasts or with the simple provision of spaces for picnics, tents,

caravans and campers to meet the independence needs of those who love to prepare to eat independently, possibly resorting only to the purchase of farm products at zero kilometers from Campagna Amica.

This year, with the spread of fires, particular attention must be paid to barbecues.
