Director Wolfgang Petersen ("The Neverending Story", "Air Force 1") passed away | Israel today

Director Wolfgang Petersen, known for films such as "The Neverending Story" and "Air Force 1", passed away last Friday, according to his representatives last night (Tuesday).

Petersen died at the age of 81 at his home in Los Angeles from pancreatic cancer, in the arms of his wife of 50 years, Marie Antoinette.

Petersen broke into the world consciousness with his second film, "The Submarine" from 1981, a suspense drama depicting a mission on which a German submarine embarks during World War II.

The film was a huge hit and won many praises, and was even nominated for no less than six Oscars - including for the direction and the screenplay adapted for Petersen himself.

Immediately after the success of the film, Hollywood "kidnapped" him - and he directed a series of films that received varying degrees of success and appreciation.

Three years after "The Submarine", "The Neverending Story" was released - a fantasy that captured the hearts of the world and quickly became a true classic.

A year later, the sci-fi action film "Enemy Mine" was released, which was a big failure.

He took a six-year hiatus until the thriller Shattered came out, which also failed.

Fortunately for Petersen, his career did not end here: in '93 the action film "In the Line of Fire" was released, which was a great success and was even nominated for three Oscars.

In '95 the action thriller "Eruption" was released which was a great success, two years later "Air Force 1" was released which became a big hit and in 2000 "The Perfect Storm" was released.

In 2004, he directed Brad Pitt in the period war film Troy, which became the most successful film of his career.

He continued his action film streak with 2006's Poseidon, which was a resounding failure that was panned by critics and was also his last film in Hollywood. 10 years later, in 2016, Petersen returned to his roots in the German crime comedy Vier Gegen Die Bank, which was a huge success. across Europe This was his last film.

Petersen was also known for several films he produced, including "Instinct" and "The Man of the Bicentennial".
