With the end of summer the time of the gingerbread begins.

Also in supermarkets such as Kaufland, Lidl and Co. We say how long customers have to wait for gingerbread and speculoos.

The end of summer is approaching and with it the beginning of the gingerbread and speculoos season.

From the beginning of September at the latest, often as early as the end of August, you can find the spicy specialties on the shelves of almost every supermarket.

What confuses and angers some, makes others' hearts beat faster in anticipation of Christmas.

It is also another source of income for retailers in difficult times.

Due to the heat wave and low water, there are delivery difficulties.

In some cases, goods are only delivered much later.

This does not apply to Lebkuchen in Germany.

Which is for a simple reason

Gingerbread is available in other countries at any time of the year

The fact that gingerbread is only available at Christmas is more of a phenomenon in German-speaking countries that arose during the 30-year war (1618 to 1648).

Because there were not enough spices, gingerbread was only eaten on special festivals, such as Christmas.

This custom has not changed over the centuries.

In other countries, the pastry is available all year round.

Only in recent years have gingerbread manufacturers tried to sell their products all year round again.

The Wicklein company announced last year to the

Stuttgarter Nachrichten

that around half of its annual turnover is generated in the main season between October and December.

In order to avoid losses, the manufacturers are now positioning themselves more broadly and expanding the year-round range.

Gingerbread fans can rejoice: sales will start as early as August

Consumer habits are changing, which can also be seen in the demand, because some customers seem to be asking for the pastries as early as the beginning of August.

The sale and production of gingerbread is also influenced by climate change and its consequences, such as inflation and delivery problems.

So maybe spices are not available due to transportation problems.

In 2020, the first gingerbread that was available all year round was released under the motto "Enjoyment is always in season", so that profit can be made from the existing interest of customers.

The experiences of the last few years have shown that customers are happy to accept the seasonal goods on offer.

So far, at least, there don't seem to be any major difficulties, so that customers can buy the first speculoos, dominoes, stollen and gingerbread from the end of August.

However, the first products that appear in the supermarkets are not sold as Christmas products, but belong to the autumn range.

This is intended to mitigate a little criticism, because the goods are theoretically not part of the Christmas range.

Santa Clauses are not long in coming

From the end of September, however, the first chocolate Santa Clauses and marzipan will be available to buy.

From there, the branches are constantly supplied with new goods, so that the goods remain fresh until Christmas and there are no shortages.

As announced by the Kaufland press office, customers can look forward to the delicacies, because soon the - if you want to call it that - pre-Christmas snacking will start again!
