(ANSA) - LONDON, AUGUST 16 - There are no dragons circling over Leicester Square.

But the Iron Throne, already at the center of 'Gameof Thrones', makes a fine show of itself on the red carpet, between cameras, journalists, security officers, a curious crowd and fans waiting for the cast.

London is the stage for the European premiere of 'House of the Dragon', the anticipated 'Game of Thrones' based on the novel by George RR

Martin 'Fire and Blood' is set about 200 years before the saga that in eight seasons, between 2011 and 2019, has captivated millions of viewers around the world.

The new series, in ten episodes, will be broadcast exclusively on Sky and streamed only on Now from 22 August, simultaneously with Hbo.

Between friendships and rivalry, loyalty and betrayal, sex and violence, the series tells the Shakespearean story of CasaTargaryen, whose last descendant was Daenerys, heroine of the 'Throne': we see the family at the height of its power, saddled with dragons, ruling undisturbed on Westeros, armored by a patriarchate always ready to close ranks to preserve the kingdom.

But a woman will claim power, dragging dynasty into the civil war.

The story begins with King Jaehaerys Targaryen who, at the point of death, summons the Grand Council to decide on the succession to the throne.

Jaehaerys outlived his male children so the choice will be between his nephews: Rhaenys (Eve Best) and his cousin Viserys (Paddy Considine).

The Council votes for Viserys, even though Rhaenys has all the credentials to aspire to the throne, but she is a woman and so she will always remain 'the missing laregina'.

A few years later, also Viserys, ill, will have to face the knot of succession, choosing between the first child, Rhaenyra (Milly Alcock and then, as an adult, Emma D'Arcy), and her younger brother, the unpredictable and bloodthirsty Prince Daemon (Matt Smith).

The prospect that Dameon may govern, however, worries not only the king, but also his advisers closest to him, starting with the first knight.

Ser OttoHightower (Rhys Ifans).

Viserys will designate him heir Rhaenyra, breaking the tradition that has always prevented women from gaining power.
