There has recently been an interesting innovation in some Kaufland branches.

The discounter giant wants to make its contribution to environmental protection.

Neckarsulm – Whether private individuals or corporations worth millions: When it comes to environmental protection, everyone pulls together.

After plastic bags were already banned in German supermarkets at the beginning of the year, the discount chain Kaufland presented another change that should make weekly shopping much more ecological in the future.

Because similar to what has been possible in some independent shops for some time now, customers will also be able to buy groceries from the retail giants at so-called “unpackaged” stations in the future – in a way that is nature-conscious and completely without the hassle of plastic waste.

Kaufland presents a new "unpackaged" concept: shopping without plastic waste

As the name suggests, the "unpackaged" stations focus on shopping without excess plastic waste.

Instead of the usual packaging, products are offered in practical dispensers that are somewhat reminiscent of hotel buffets.

If you shop at Kaufland and bring your own containers, you can fill them up as you like at the station after weighing them beforehand, thus saving yourself the hassle of throwing away empty bags and cans.

Environmentally friendly is that easy.

As the Neckarsulm-based company announced on the short message platform Twitter, the “unpackaged” stations should include 40 staple foods such as pasta, rice and muesli.

Products such as meat and fish are still only available in the well-known plastic packaging, but it is still a big step forward.

The practical “unpackaged” stations are already available at these Kaufland locations:

  • Berlin-Niederschoenweide, Schnellerstrasse 21

  • Hamburg-Bramfeld, Bramfeld Dorfplatz 18

  • Heidelberg-Pfaffengrund, Eppelheimer Strasse 78

  • Cologne-Ehrenfeld, Thebäerstrasse 9

  • Leipzig, Paunsdorfer Allee 1

  • Munich-Moosach, Bunzlauer Platz 5-7

    Pfungstadt, Eberstädter Straße 200

  • Steinheim ad Murr, Steinbeisstrasse 15

Kaufland presents new "unpackaged" concept: positive reactions from customers

After being introduced at the Pfungstadt and Steinheim/Murr locations last summer, the “unpackaged” concept is now being used in eight Kaufland branches, including one in Munich-Moosach.

Supermarket buyers react enthusiastically to the groundbreaking innovation on social media.

"That's finally a good idea," praises one customer, "so that the environment can hopefully smile again soon," another does the same.

Despite all the euphoria, more critical voices can also be heard.

In particular, the price of unpackaged food does not seem to be going down that well.

"As long as unpackaged costs more than packaged, it will probably only be possible to implement it with great hesitation," writes a buyer on Twitter.

It remains to be seen how the "unpackaged" stations will develop in terms of supply and price.

Meanwhile, some Kaufland customers want another innovation that pizza lovers in particular should like very much.
