In 2022, life has become more expensive in many areas.

In particular, rising energy prices have a significantly higher impact on German citizens at the end of the month.

The federal government is taking several measures to relieve the burden, including the 9-euro ticket.

A number of plans are already on the table for next year.

The measures that have been taken so far and those that may come are listed below.

First relief package: commuter allowance, child allowance & EEG surcharge

The first relief package was launched in February of this year.

  • The commuter allowance was increased from 35 to 38 cents.

Those who commute more than 20 kilometers can claim this retrospectively from the beginning of the year.

  • The employee lump sum was increased by EUR 200 to EUR 1,200, also retrospectively as of January 1, 2022.

  • The basic allowance was increased by EUR 363 to EUR 10,347

  • The monthly child supplement was increased from 209 to 229 euros per child.

  • The EEG levy (Renewable Energy Sources Act) has been abolished since July.

Overall, this provides relief of a total of 6.6 billion euros.

  • Recipients of housing benefit receive a one-time heating subsidy of 270 euros.

For a household with two people, the amount is 350 euros.

BAföG recipients and trainees with vocational training grants or training allowances currently receive 230 euros.

Second relief package: energy price flat rate, 9-euro ticket, children's bonus

In May, the federal government decided on further austerity measures.

  • The 9-euro ticket already mentioned at the beginning, which created a particularly cheap and attractive offer for public transport.

  • In June, the energy tax on fuel was also reduced to the European minimum - this "tank discount" reduced the tax rate for petrol by 29.55 cents per liter and 14.04 cents per liter for diesel.

  • All employees subject to income tax in tax brackets 1 to 5 receive an energy price flat rate of 300 euros gross.

It is paid as a salary supplement.

  • Thanks to the child bonus, families receive an additional one-time payment of 100 euros per child.

  • Recipients of social benefits also receive a one-off payment of 200 euros.

For recipients of unemployment benefits, it is 100 euros.

Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz has announced a housing benefit reform for 2023, which should primarily benefit retired people and students.

Details are not yet available.

Further relief measures are currently being discussed, but for many of them it is not yet clear which will ultimately be implemented.

For example, the commuter allowance could be significantly increased again from 2023.

Not only long-distance commuters should benefit from this.

An extension of the tank discount is also under discussion.

For many citizens, the plans for a successor to the 9-euro ticket are also exciting.

Among other things, the Greens suggested introducing a regional ticket for a flat rate of 29 euros and a nationwide ticket for 49 euros.
