Viola Davis will soon play Doctor Volumnia Gaul on screen in the prequel to the
Hunger Games
saga , the film's Twitter account announced on Monday August 15.
The actress from the series
How to get away with murder
joins the cast of
The Ballad of the Serpent and the
Songbird alongside Tom Blyth, Rachel Zegler and Peter Dinklage.
This fifth installment in the franchise is set to hit theaters in November 2023.
The film, also based on the dystopian novels by Suzanne Collins and directed by Francis Lawrence, places its plot about sixty years before the first four parts of the successful saga, at the time of the tenth edition of the Hunger Games.
A young Coriolanus Snow (Tom Blyth) – years before he became the tyrannical President of the Republic of Panem – is chosen as a mentor to mentor Lucy Gray Baird, who represents District 12 in this new edition of the deadly competition.
Dr. Gaul, then designer of the Games, is described by Francis Lawrence as
"as cruel as she is creative and as fearsome as she is formidable",
according to remarks reported by
Deadline
.
“Snow's expertise as a political operator grows in large part through his experiences with her as a dominant figure in the Games,”
he continues.
