A female elephant gave birth to a calf in Kenya, the rest of the herd came to guard the newborn

The safari in Kenya always provides exciting moments, but tourists on a safari tour in the Maasai Mara reserve did not expect to see the birth of Pilon right in front of their eyes.

Immediately after the birth, the herd of elephants arrived to guard the soft newborn so that it would not be a target for predators.

The Maasai Mara Game Reserve in southwestern Kenya - part of the Serengeti region in Tanzania and Kenya - always provides exciting moments of safari at its best.

One of them happened this week when a pregnant heifer gave birth to a cute Philon, while the rest of the herd arrived immediately after he was born to protect the newborn.

In a video uploaded to Twitter, the elephant is seen tearing up to give birth and then within seconds a baby elephant emerges from her, all still wrapped in the placenta.

Immediately after, the elephants arrive under a torrential rain, when the mother tries to urge the elephant to stand up and removes the remnants of the placenta from him, so that he can join the herd and not be a target for predators.

The African elephant that lives in the Masai Mara is the largest land animal in the world.

Its height can reach 4.5 meters and its weight six tons.

Elephant herds in the wild are matriarchal, meaning they are led by a female rather than a male, with the leading female elephant usually being the oldest in the herd.

The males in the herd usually leave the group after they mature and become independent.

A female filly's pregnancy lasts almost two years (23 months) and she gives birth to one cub in each pregnancy.

The baby is usually weaned from its mother's milk after 6-18 months, although they may continue to breastfeed until the age of six.

The female elephants give birth between the ages of 25 and 45, while the males start mating at 20. An African elephant can live up to the age of 70.
