These drone images show the extent of the ongoing drought that Italy has been suffering for a long time.
Lake Garda, the country's largest lake, has reached its lowest level in 15 years.
In the popular holiday resort of Sirmione, the shore is now rocky.
The water level is only 30 centimeters above the reference water level.
The average level in recent years at this time was at least half a meter higher.
Barbara Bazzoli, tourist
“Compared to before, there's a lot less water this year, so you can see the stones.
In the past, the water sometimes flooded almost all the stones, and sometimes you had to hold your backpack over your head when walking because the water was up to your waist.
So sometimes you couldn't get through at all, while now 20 to 25 meters of stones are exposed.
That's pretty sensational.
There hasn't been anything like this in years, at least I've never seen such a spectacle in the years I've been here.
«
Because of the threatening situation, less water is diverted from Lake Garda for agriculture.
The situation is also worsening in other parts of Italy. The Po, at over 650 kilometers the longest river in the country, is suffering from the extreme effects of the lack of winter snow.
Barbara Bazzoli, tourist
“I am concerned because I believe it will take at least a few years for the situation to return to normal after this year.
In my opinion, it would have to rain more than copiously for a few years to solve the problem.«
In the face of the worst drought in 70 years, the Italian government declared a state of emergency in several regions in the center and north of the country in early July.
According to the authorities, tourism on Lake Garda is still doing very well.
