Francis Linel, a multi-faceted artist, who was an actor, comedian, singer, dancer and leader of reviews, died on the night of August 16 to 17, his relatives announced.
During his career, which began in 1943, he shared the bill with Fernandel, sang alongside Annie Cordy, or even shot a video with Claude Lelouch.
In the village of Nonza, in Corsica, where he resided, Francis Linel was a celebrity.
Lately, at 94, he was grumbling about not being able to leave his house to go and throw himself one at the Café de la Tour.
The actor was one of about thirty inhabitants who stay in the village all year round.
He made his debut at the age of fifteen, on the stage of the Alcazar in Marseille, his hometown.
Then, in 1950, he won the Grand Prix de la Chanson Française in Deauville, with
Le Consul de Curitiba
.
The same year, at age 22, he left France to perform for several weeks in New York.
Then Paris called him and Francis Linel became, for two years, leader of the Lido review.
In 1953, Fernandel gave him a place in the film
Le Boulanger de Valorgue
by Henri Verneuil, where he played the actor's son.
Francis Linel recorded numerous records (
Des millions d'Arlequins
,
J'ai bought une petite auto
,
Monsieur le consul de Curitiba
,
Le Cha cha cha
) and performed several times at the Olympia.
In 1958, Claude Lelouch even produced a scopitone for him, in sepia color, during which the singer performed his piece
Le Cha Cha Cha
.
