Not only the sleeping position of the newborn plays a role in the increased risk of "sudden infant death".

If parents provide their baby with a suitable sleeping environment, this can also reduce possible dangers.

According to the Eltern Online

portal, parents should know the following tips and measures

:

  • Room temperature between 16 and 18 °C is recommended.

  • Before going to bed, air out the room where the baby sleeps.

  • Family members who smoke should not smoke in the home or around the baby.

  • Do not place additional objects such as pillows, towels or stuffed animals in the crib as barriers against turning.

In an emergency, the opposite can actually happen: the little one is forced into a lateral or prone position by the pressure of the objects, but the resistance prevents it from turning back onto its back.

  • Do without large blankets in the baby's bed - the baby can pull the blanket over his head while sleeping and, in the worst case, suffocate.

  • If possible, choose a tested baby mattress that is not too soft.

Sudden infant death: sleeping bag can reduce the risk

  • According to experts, newborns and babies should wear a sleeping bag until they are at least one year old. In principle, this replaces the blanket - this can significantly reduce the risk of sudden infant death.

It is important that the sleeping bag fits well and that the baby's head cannot slip through the opening.

  • The baby should not be dressed too warmly or too coldly to sleep.
