Quite a few foods can make people sick if they are prepared or eaten incorrectly - this also includes some German vegetables.

Stuttgart – The topic of food prices has been occupying consumers in Germany for weeks.

And there is no end in sight, since the prices for everyday products are becoming ever more expensive, even in discount stores.

In addition, industry insiders see no further easing in the current price crisis, on the contrary: "The worst is yet to come for consumers," explains Aurélien Duthoit, senior economist at Allianz Trade.

Also in Germany: Ten dangerous foods that can be deadly

In a study on the development of food prices in Germany, he and his colleagues determined that the producers have by no means passed on all the additional costs to the consumers.

According to BW24

, the most dangerous foods, some of which are so toxic that they can kill people

, show that not only the cost of food, but also things such as correct preparation and consumption are essential - these include:

  • Foods that produce solanine (plant toxin) – such as aubergines, potatoes or tomatoes.

  • Foods that produce cucurbitacins (nerve toxins) – these include cucurbits such as zucchini or melons.

  • The leafy green of rhubarb, where oxalic acid, a neurotoxin, is found.

  • Uncooked types of beans, whose dangerous protein compounds damage the intestines.

  • Puffer fish dishes: The fish is one of the most poisonous animals in the world, wrong preparation deadly!

  • Consumers can choke on Sannakji (live squid, Koranic specialty).

  • Casu Marzu (sheep's cheese made from sardines) is aged using maggots that are eaten with it.

  • Greenland shark meat is highly toxic and deadly when raw.

  • The akee fruit from Jamaica is edible, but be careful: the skin and seeds can kill people.

  • A French national dish, frog can be fatal if the genus is poisonous.

Many people know that exotic animal species such as the puffer fish, the Namibian frog or even squid are deadly delicacies if they are prepared incorrectly.

But very few people know that there are foods in Germany that can be extremely dangerous for people.

These include foods that contain the natural toxin solanine - it can put a strain on the liver and cause headaches and gastrointestinal problems.

Prepare potatoes and co. correctly: plant toxins are dangerous for humans

Therefore, foods such as potatoes should be cooked and vegetables such as tomatoes should only be eaten when they are actually ripe.

Especially in the case of pumpkin plants, a bitter taste is also a sign that the vegetables are not yet ripe and should therefore not be eaten.

Basically, the leafy green of rhubarb is not edible, because the plant toxin oxalic acid can poison the kidneys and, according to

web.de

, cause stomach and respiratory problems.

Just like potatoes, all types of beans should be well cooked.

If you don't, you risk gut damage due to the protein compound phasin, which causes red blood cells to clump together.

Dangerous and harmful to health, yes, but most foods in Germany are not deadly - if they are prepared correctly.

Things are different abroad, because one wrong bite can be a death sentence there.

Ripe, red tomatoes are safe to eat, but if the vegetables are still green, you should better keep your hands off them - danger of solanine!

Dangerous foods abroad: live squid and maggots in cheese

Sannakji, a Korean specialty made from live baby squid, is not for the faint of heart.

Although these animals are not poisonous, their tentacles can still move during the chewing and swallowing process and lead to death by suffocation - apparently this is not uncommon,

reports

web.de.

Live maggots, which are added to sheep's cheese made from sardines during the maturing process, can be just as dangerous.

The animals make the sheep's cheese nice and creamy, but can also attack the human intestine because they are eaten with it.

So the price for a creamy consistency and a powerful aroma can be expensive.

Greenland shark meat also takes some getting used to, which can be eaten but not fresh.

It only becomes edible after a long period of storage (fermentation process).

Appropriately, the name of the Greenland delicacy: rotten shark.

Dangerous food in raw state: Greenland shark meat only becomes edible after fermentation.

The dish is therefore also called “rotten shark”.

Beware of dishes made from poisonous animals: frogs are served in France

In the case of frog dishes, however, a longer storage time does not help.

Although frogs are basically edible, you should keep your hands, or rather your lips, away from poisonous species.

These include poison dart frogs, but also the giant bullfrog - and be careful: even the skin of the animals is poisonous.

The conclusion: Fruit and vegetables as well as dishes of animal origin should be consumed with caution in the truest sense of the word.

And highly toxic foods such as puffer fish, squid or sharks should only be processed by professionals who are familiar with the preparation.

As far as dangerous foods in Germany are concerned, the following rule of thumb can be remembered: Only eat ripe foods and always cook products such as potatoes or beans well.

In stark contrast,

fr.de

lists foods that have an anti-inflammatory effect and are therefore even health-promoting.

In Germany the preparation of puffer fish is forbidden, in Japan the poisonous animal is considered a delicacy.

Observe shelf life and preparation: enjoy healthy food

Dangerous and even deadly on the one hand, healthy on the other - food is diverse.

And in addition to the right preparation, consumers can also help ensure that meat and the like remain edible for a long time by storing it correctly.

Anyone who does not store around ten foods in the refrigerator benefits from a longer shelf life and an intense taste.

Appropriately: 9 foods that can be stored well, without a fridge or freezer.
