Exhibition: Peter Lindbergh listening to women

CRITICISM - The Popular Pavilion of Montpellier organizes the first posthumous retrospective of the German photographer.


By Peter Lindbergh (1944-2019), no one can forget the smile.

A trainer's smile who knows how to tame his pretty beasts.

Born Peter Brodbeck on November 23, 1944 in occupied Poland, Peter Lindbergh grew up in Duisburg, in the Ruhr, and left a photographic work that resembles him, between solitude and brief encounters, between melancholy and the miracle of beauty, between the harshness of reality and imagination wide open.

You can always recognize a photo by Peter Lindbergh by its pathos-free sensitivity where the black and white looks towards the fine arts, where the beauties pose without a mask, where life seems to pierce a gray winter day.

When he photographs Chiara Mastroianni, he emphasizes her big sad eyes and anchors her more on the side of Marcello than Deneuve.

Like him, Simon Brodbeck, his son and his carbon copy, speaks with a smile.

Himself a photographer, he works in duo with the artist Lucie de Barbuat and has inherited this paternal sweetness.
