A rare record: the rams drank water in the steppe, but then a wolf came

You hardly see the white ram in Israel, which went extinct and was reintroduced in the 90s.

But a field camera in the prairie captured a herd of rams sipping water under the cover of night, but then a surprise arrived in the form of a wolf.

That's how it ends

The white ram is an animal that is quite rare to see in the wild, and actually became extinct from its natural environment in the steppe, and was reintroduced in the 90's, and today they can be seen mainly in the wild of Yatbata.

But a field camera recently recorded a herd of wild rams, including a wild-born young ram as well as a ram with a collar and a GPS transmitter, coming to drink water at one of the only water points on the prairie, but then came a surprise.

The peaceful Rams who were sipping water under the cover of night, did not expect to meet a wolf that suddenly emerged towards them.

"The wolf that appears in the video seems to be a relatively young individual, and it seems more like he wanted to play and drive away the rams than to devour them," says Lavala!

Tourism Dr. Tal Folk, an ecologist at the Nature and Parks Authority.

According to her, rams, especially in a herd, are not simple prey due to the sharp horns that can seriously injure a wolf. In them, he enjoyed driving them out of the water, and after a few minutes the rams returned to the water to drink."

Two of the herd of rams are broadcast, as you can see.

The ram - an animal that became extinct in the 19th century from the wild in Israel

Polk adds, that the white ram in Israel was reintroduced to the wild in the late 90s of the last century, after it had completely disappeared from the wild in Israel at the end of the 19th century following a massive hunt that took place after the introduction of firearms for use.

"The breeding nucleus of eight individuals that was established in the wild Yotbata in the late 1960s is the basis of the population that exists today in Israel," she says.

"The rehabilitation of the population in the wild began with large resettlements of 10-20 individuals in several places in the Negev and the Arabah and continued for about ten years. The rams that were released began to reproduce in the wild and form herds of 2-15 individuals led by a dominant female and male."

Today the number of rams living in the bar is unknown, but the assumption is that there are between 150-200 individuals.

As part of the population recovery and monitoring program, a new recovery program was started in 2017 that includes rapid returns (directly to the wild without an adaptation period to the release site) of small groups of televised rams, in order for them to join the local populations and provide information about their roaming and living areas.

Polk explains that "according to the readings received from the transmitters, there are two rams broadcast with the herd in the video - a male that was released in November 2021 and a female that was released in December 2021."
