During the current year 2022, the General Authority for Education Buildings in the Ministry of Education completed the rehabilitation and maintenance of school buildings and schools in all governorates within the reconstruction plans and the investment budget of the local administration and the rehabilitation of schools damaged by terrorism, in addition to the works assigned to it by the Ministry, according to its Director General, Engineer Muhammad Haitham Badawi.
The works carried out during the current year, according to a Bedouin statement to SANA reporter, include the completion of the covering and equipping of the Citizen Service Center in the Ministry of Education, which is expected to be invested soon, and the follow-up to the rehabilitation and maintenance work of school buildings implemented by the building departments in the governorates, in addition to the completion of the new Directorate of Education building in Hama governorate, which is expected to be completed Restoration and investment during next September and the furnishing of a kindergarten in Tartous governorate in preparation for investing it in the next academic year.
Badawi pointed out that the works carried out in the school building departments in the governorates during the current year have rehabilitated 6,000 schools with light maintenance from the investment plan of the Ministry, in addition to rehabilitating 150 schools from the reconstruction plan with light damage, and completing projects implemented from the reconstruction plan for the past year for 25 schools to date.
Regarding the difficulties and obstacles that affect the process of rehabilitating schools affected by terrorism, Badawi said that they were represented by the difficulty of accessing the damaged schools in some areas, where this problem was solved in cooperation with the services departments in the governorates and the relevant security authorities, in addition to the weakness of the specialized financial funding of the Ministry from the investment plan for light maintenance and reconstruction, pointing out that coordination is underway with the relevant ministries to increase specialized accreditation so that the authority can maintain and rehabilitate a large number of schools, ensuring their investment in the educational process in order to reduce pressure and crowding of students in schools.
Badawi pointed out that the number of schools currently investing is 11,000 out of a total of 21,000 schools that were in service before 2011.
According to the data of the Directorate of Planning and International Cooperation in the Ministry, the number of partially damaged schools in all governorates reached 8,625 schools, 555 schools were completely damaged, 4,192 schools were inaccessible, 2,490 ready-made schools were not closed, 27 shelter schools and 3,000 schools were rehabilitated.
