Wrinkled potatoes, wilted lettuce?

Do not throw away!

With a simple water trick, wrinkled vegetables can be freshened up overnight.

Who does not know that, you have left the carrots in the fridge or cellar for a few days too long and now they are even too soft to peel them.

Wilted vegetables are not to be commended, but they are common.

All the better if you don't have to throw it away, but can bring it back to life with a little freshness treatment.

As soon as the vegetables rot or go moldy, the hops and malt are lost, and then the only solution is to throw them away.

But if it just looks tired, you can use the water trick to help it get crunchy again overnight: To do this, put wilted vegetables in a bowl of water overnight – preferably in the fridge.

Sometimes even a few hours help.

The method works particularly well with "bulky" foods such as radishes, celery, carrots, potatoes or beetroot.

These have dried out and shriveled up due to the loss of water during long storage.

You can replenish your reserves with a water bath.

A frugal Queensland mother even managed to refresh a few-week-old cauliflower so it looked new,

Proper storage is the be-all and end-all

But tomatoes, fruit or salads are also woken up with this trick.

Salads often only need a bath of about 15 minutes.

As housekeeping expert Elke Sommer advises

Bavarian television

, it is still beneficial if you add about 1 tablespoon of sugar per liter of water.

To prevent vegetables from wilting in the first place, here are some storage tips:

  • Store the lettuce in the fridge wrapped in a damp tea towel.

  • Radishes, kohlrabi or carrots stay fresh longer if you cut off the green before storing.

  • Do not wash carrots before storing.

  • Store potatoes in a dark, dry and cool place - without plastic wrap.

  • Do not store vegetables near pears or apples, as these emit ethylene, a gas that ripens.

Not only the storage itself, but also the type of harvest often has an influence on the shelf life of the vegetables.

For example, with potatoes, the right time is important, this should not happen too early.

Onions, on the other hand, should be allowed to dry before storage.
