Shopping at Aldi and Lidl could be different in the future than it has been up to now.

The drugstore dm is also developing a method that could soon make shopping more independent.

Munich – The discounters Aldi and Lidl apparently want to introduce some innovations in their branches.

Self-scanning is now to be used more intensively, i.e. independent scanning of the products with the help of an app.

The well-known drugstore brand dm is also set to enter the race with a similar idea.

Automatic payment options such as self-service checkouts are already available in some supermarkets, hardware stores and furniture stores in Germany.

As the

Lebensmittel Zeitung

reports, Aldi and Lidl now also want to take a step in the direction of more automation: Scan&Go of shopping should apparently be possible there in the future.

In concrete terms, this means that customers use a special app from the respective discounter to scan the product or food they are putting in their shopping cart while they are still shopping.

Arrived at the checkout, the purchase is already recorded.

Aldi Süd and Lidl are jumping on the Scan&Go train

The Lebensmittel Zeitung

became aware of the expected innovation

through a job advertisement from Aldi Süd.

Accordingly, a requirements analyst is being sought who will plan and support “the introduction of the Scan&Go app in over 7,000 branches worldwide”.

However, the press office of the discounter did not want to confirm or deny these plans when asked by the newspaper and only said that they would monitor the market and check to what extent Scan&Go is suitable.

The situation is different in Switzerland, where Aldi Süd has been offering a Scan&Go app for a year.

Meanwhile, Kaufland introduced changes for more environmental protection in some branches.

An indication that Lidl is also jumping on the bandwagon was found by the newspaper in the branch finder function of several Lidl websites.

There it is partly possible to specify "Shop&Go" as a criterion when searching for a branch.

However, the search currently shows zero results, which is why it is obvious that development and testing is still going on here as well.

Internally, Lidl is said to have already tested such an app in London, but it didn't go through in the end.

Lidl International also did not respond specifically to a press inquiry from

Lebensmittel Zeitung

, but only spoke of observing and pursuing "innovative checkout options".

Drugstore dm confirms development of a Scan&Go method

The drugstore chain dm officially confirmed the development of Scan&Go to the newspaper.

Such a system from an external manufacturer had already been tried there in the past, but only a few customers had used it.

But since people “do everything with their cell phones”, the idea is still to be pursued, the newspaper quotes IT boss Roman Melcher at dm.

Aldi, Lidl and dm are thus taking the same path that Kaufland, Rewe and Netto, for example, have already taken: In Germany, self-scanning should already be possible in over 50 Kaufland and Netto branches each, and even in 172 Penny- branches and at 167 Rewe locations.

At Rewe, a customer was recently appalled by an observation that caused a Facebook dispute.
