The income tax return is an annual ritual for employees.
However, filling out the forms isn't exactly fun and can take some time, especially if you're not very familiar with it.
But it is all the more gratifying when it says in the tax assessment that you get money back.
This year there are several tax breaks that employees can benefit from.
But how long does it actually take for the tax office to process the tax return and then send out the tax assessment?
Tax assessment: This is the average processing time at the tax office
In contrast to the submission of the tax return, there is no deadline for the tax office by which the tax assessments must be sent at the latest.
According to the Munich tax office, processing takes eight to ten weeks on average – but occasionally it can take longer, for example in more difficult cases or if more tax returns are submitted than usual.
If there are still ambiguities and you have to submit further documents, this can delay processing.
The tax office recommends submitting the tax return online via ELSTER, as this drastically reduces the processing time.
Fortunately, if you're entitled to a tax refund, it won't be long in coming.
According to the Munich tax office, the money should already be in your account when you receive the tax assessment.

If you have not heard from the tax office after ten weeks or longer, you can ask the tax office how the tax assessment is going.
If you still haven't received a decision after six months, you have the option of submitting an objection to inactivity in accordance with Section 347 of the Fiscal Code (AO).
Before you consider this step, you should definitely check with the tax office.
