This changes nothing for you.

In the event of imminent storms and thunderstorms, you are well advised to stay at home if possible.

Because outside it can be extremely dangerous during a storm due to falling branches or roof tiles and objects flying around.

To ensure that you and your loved ones are safe at home, you should take a few precautions.

In the following you can read how to make your house weatherproof and how to behave in an emergency.

Are you at home and a strong storm is beating you?

This is how you should behave

According to the

Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster

Assistance, you should close windows, shutters or shutters during hail and hurricanes and stay away from unprotected openings.

If you have the time, you should secure movable objects outside, such as garden furniture, potted plants or bicycles.

It is best to stay in an interior room on the ground floor during the storm and avoid basement rooms, which can quickly fill up and then become life-threatening in the event of flood disasters or heavy rain.

You should also avoid rooms with large ceiling spans, which are particularly at risk of collapsing in storms.

If possible, unplug devices or use a surge protector (promotional link).

What to do if you are caught out in a storm outside?

If you are surprised by a storm outdoors, according to the Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance, you should seek shelter in a building if possible.

If you can't find shelter in an emergency when there is hail, you should lie face down on the ground and protect your head and neck with your hands.

During a thunderstorm you should avoid open terrain, trees, towers, masts, antennas and fences and crouch down on the balls of your feet with your feet close together, if possible in a hollow.

Also, keep a minimum distance of 50 meters from overhead power lines and do not touch objects with metal parts such as umbrellas and bicycles.

by the way

In the car you are safe in a thunderstorm.

So stay in the vehicle but do not touch any bare metal parts.

Checklist: How to protect your house from storms

With the checklist from

Bau-welt.de you can

make your house safe from storms and protect yourself and your loved ones from potential dangers in an emergency.

  • Servicing gutters:

Regularly remove dirt and leaves from your gutters so that rainwater can drain away properly in a storm.

  • Second water-bearing level:

    Hail can damage roof tiles.

A second water-bearing level under the roof covering, preferably with a hail resistance class of four to five, can help.

  • Check the roof:

Regularly check your roof for cracks, which can become a serious hazard during a storm.

Regular roof maintenance as part of a corresponding maintenance contract ensures that the contracted roofer also recognizes weak points as early as possible.

  • Preventing wind suction:

There are now stricter regulations on wind suction protection for roofs.

The side facing away from the wind is particularly affected, but the edge and corner areas are also challenged.

Storm clips are used to protect the roof tiles.

Optionally, screwing the roof covering to the substructure also helps.

  • Traffic safety obligation:

You are obliged to eliminate possible sources of danger on your property.

These include, for example, hollow trees or rotten branches.

How to protect yourself and others.

  • Fasten movable items:

retract your awning and place flower boxes, garden furniture, garbage cans, bicycles etc. in the garage to protect them from the storm.

  • Protection while you're away:

A smart home controller reacts to sun and heat, but also to rain and storms.

Roller shutters or windows are closed automatically and protect the house from heat and moisture.

Alternatively, you should leave a front door key with a neighbor in your absence, for example, in case of an emergency.

  • Sufficient insurance:

building insurance regulates damage to the building shell, while the interior is covered by household contents insurance and glass insurance helps with damage to windows or patio doors.

If, despite taking the right precautions, a tree falls on a neighboring property, the liability insurance is responsible.

If there is a risk of flooding due to heavy rain, natural hazard insurance is essential.

Report any damage immediately to the insurance company and, if necessary, to your landlord.

In addition, you should record the damage using your smartphone or a camera.

  • What to do after the storm:

collect parts lying on the street or sidewalk and document all damage for your insurance company.

Be careful and don't put yourself in danger, for example by climbing onto the roof yourself.
