Luggage chaos at Heathrow Airport in England (Photo: YouTube)

A passenger of the German airline Lufthansa, who had to spend the cruise she was on without her suitcase that was lost at the destination airport, finally found it when a stranger in a city she had never visited, ran into her and sent her a message about it.

However, six weeks after her flight, her suitcase still hadn't arrived.

Step by step: what to do when the suitcase gets lost at the airport?

Lisa Kahn from the United States, flew to Italy with her husband, son and daughter on June 30 for a two-night stay in the Tuscany area followed by a six-night cruise in the Italy and Greece area.

According to her, their first flight from Orlando to Frankfurt, Germany was delayed, and they missed the connecting flight to Rome.

Instead, they were directed to an alternative flight to Florence but this was cancelled.

Kahn said they stood in line at the Lufthansa customer service desk in Frankfurt for nearly two hours.

In the end, they boarded an alternative flight to Rome with the subsidiary Air Dolomiti, but the luggage, as mentioned, did not arrive.

The rental car was used for round trips to the airport

She also said that after landing in Rome, the family members waited for the next flight from Frankfurt, in case their bags were on that plane, but in the end they gave up after the bags did not arrive.

Business Insider reports that because of this, the family canceled their stay in Tuscany, but still had to pay for the accommodation, and instead booked a hotel in Rome so they could wait for the bags.

The only bag that arrived was the son's.

The other three bags are gone.

"My husband spent the first two days of our vacation going back and forth from downtown Rome to the airport. He was constantly checking flight schedules and barely slept," Kahn said.

"Our rental car, worth 700 dollars, intended to go to Tuscany and back, was only used by us in trying to locate the luggage."

She further added that "we couldn't even enjoy the sites in Rome because we were tense and wondering if we would find the luggage or if we would have to start buying things for a six-night cruise," she said.

According to her, during this time they spent $3,000 on new items for the trip, including clothes and designer items, including a Gucci handbag, a Prada hat and a Chanel belt.

"It would have been disappointing to be on this amazing cruise and go to places like Capri, Santorini and Mykonos, wearing shorts and a T-shirt from Gap," she said.

The lost was found - in Florence

Even the cruise company, Royal Caribbean, was in contact with the airline to coordinate in some way the bringing of the luggage to one of the cruise ports if they were to be found, but this was unsuccessful.

"It wasn't our best trip, because I felt like there was a cloud hanging over us the whole time, but we really tried to make the best of it," she added.

On their way back, the family checked the situation in Rome again, but their bags were still not there.

Later, her daughter's bag arrived back at their home in Orlando in the United States, but the remaining two bags were nowhere to be seen.

On August 10 - more than five weeks after their flight - Kahn received a message from a stranger who told her that he had come across her suitcase at the Florence airport.

Later, he also found her husband's bag.

He sent her a text and wrote: "Hello, I wanted to let you know that your bag is at the airport in Florence, Italy. I lost five of my bags here and decided to take some pictures of (other) bag tags that were seen during the visit."

"It wasn't our best trip."

Patience ran out: the husband considered flying to Italy again

Kahn said that the message confused her, since Florence was not on their itinerary at all and she had never visited her.

She further added that her husband even considered boarding a flight from the United States to Florence to personally collect the luggage, but he finally contacted an employee of Air Dolomiti, who promised that the luggage would be sent to them in the United States.

"I confirm to you that your luggage is in Florence, unfortunately along with hundreds of other pieces of luggage," an Air Dolomiti employee wrote in an email.

"We are doing our best to transfer all remaining cases to their owners as soon as possible."

A few days ago, Kahn said that the Lufthansa company informed them that one of the bags had arrived at Washington Dallas International Airport via Munich and would be sent to Orlando with FedEx.

Kahn does not know what happened to the second missing bag.

"It's funny to me that this case went from Orlando to Frankfurt, to Florence, to Munich to Washington, Dallas. We've never been to these last three cities."

Lufthansa said that it does not refer to "individual baggage delays", but added: "Due to the current shortage of staff and because planes cannot wait indefinitely due to booked turns, it may happen that baggage that is not required on time will arrive late. In these cases, passengers are informed of the delay on time ".
