Weather forecast: It will be (again) hot and dry

In some places in Germany, no precipitation was measured at all in August - and the trend will probably continue. Meteorologists are also expecting high summer temperatures this week.

Another hot week is in store for Germany: In many places, temperatures are forecast to climb to a high of 26 to 34 degrees in midsummer.

"After the low Karin gave parts of Germany rain, sometimes in large quantities, Hoch Piet is now back in pole position," said meteorologist Lars Kirchhübel from the German Weather Service in Offenbach.

The drought, especially in western Germany, continues with no prospect of relief.

The offshoot of the Azores high will determine the weather in large parts of western and central Europe in the next few days, said the weather expert.

"However, there is always a scramble in Germany, too." Atlantic lows like Lavinia tried to penetrate the mainland between Iceland and Norway with their foothills.

In most cases, however, only the north-west of Germany and the coastal regions would be touched.

Where short showers are possible

From the Oder and Neisse to the Ore Mountains and in south-eastern Bavaria, however, thicker cloud fields and less precipitation must be expected.

A high-reaching low over the Balkan region is responsible for this.

Short showers are also possible in the Black Forest.

"In the rest of the country, Hoch Piet can largely assert itself, although he is shifting his focus to Denmark for the new week," emphasized the meteorologist.

It stays too dry.

According to the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, August overall – apart from a few areas in eastern Germany – will be far too dry compared to the long-term average.

The deviations are particularly clear in the west and south.

Black Forest, High Rhine and the Allgäu up to the Bavarian Forest would probably not have any major problems due to the high amounts of rain in the past few days.

"A look at Rhineland-Palatinate, the southern half of Hesse, the western half of North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Franconia shows a different picture," said Kirchhübel.

In the past 30 days, only about ten percent of the usual rainfall has fallen there in some places.

"In August, no precipitation at all was measured at individual stations." For example in Würzburg.
